Best Study Apps for Students: Pick by What You Need to Do
The best study app depends on the job: an app that explains step by step for homework, spaced-repetition flashcards for memorising, and a plan with practice tests for a dated exam. Two apps usually cover it, one tutor-style and one for practice, tested for a week.

Short answer: there is no single best study app
The best study app depends on the job in front of you. Understanding a new topic needs an app that explains and asks you questions back. Memorising vocabulary or formulas needs spaced repetition. A test on a fixed date needs a plan and practice under test conditions. Checking a math answer needs a solver, used after you have tried the problem yourself.
For most students that means two apps, not five: one tutor-style app for understanding and one flashcard or practice app for memory. Pick them by the job you have this week, then give them a seven-day trial (steps at the end).
| Your job this week | What to look for | Apps to check |
|---|---|---|
| Understand a topic, get unstuck on homework | Step-by-step help that asks you for the next step | Khanmigo, Astra AI |
| Memorise terms, vocabulary, formulas | Flashcards that schedule or adapt your reviews | Anki, Quizlet |
| Prepare for a test on a date | A plan that ends on the date, practice tests | Astra AI Exam Prep, Quizlet |
| Check a math answer after trying it | Step-by-step solutions | Photomath, Symbolab, Google Lens |
| Turn your own notes into practice | Upload of your own material | Astra AI Exam Prep, Anki (by hand) |
How we chose the apps on this page
We used five questions, in this order:
- Does it teach or only answer? An app that shows the full solution at once is useful for checking, not for learning.
- Does it work from your own materials? Your teacher's notes and slides are closer to your test than a generic lesson.
- What is free today? Taken from each vendor's own page, checked on 8 October 2026. If a vendor doesn't publish a price, we say so instead of guessing.
- Does it fit your course or exam?
- Who is it built for? Some apps have age or country limits that rule them out before you start.
This is not a ranking. We did not run a lab test, and there are no scores. Each app gets one fact from its own site and one drawback. Astra AI is our product. It is listed under the same rules and gets a drawback too.
Understand a topic or get unstuck on homework
When you are stuck, the right app asks you for the next step instead of printing the whole solution. If you want to know how that works in practice, see what an AI tutor is.
Khanmigo (Khan Academy). Khan Academy says Khanmigo guides learners to find the answer themselves rather than handing it over, and that the Khan Academy content library stays free. Khanmigo itself costs $4 a month or $44 a year for learners and parents. Drawback: according to its FAQ, buying it requires being 18 or older, living in the United States and having a US billing address. Under-18s get access through a parent's account. Use it when: you live in the US and already learn with Khan Academy's free lessons. More in our Khan Academy for math review.
Astra AI (our product). You photograph a question and the AI tutor walks you through the solution step by step, and you can ask a follow-up whenever a step isn't clear. You can start free without a card. Drawback: the free plan doesn't include unlimited tutoring, so long homework sessions can run into the limit. Use it when: you need help across several subjects and want to question each step.
Memorise: flashcards and spaced repetition
Flashcards work best when a card comes back just before you would forget it. Anki schedules that for you; Quizlet's Learn mode adapts to what you already know.
Anki. You rate how well you remembered each card, and Anki schedules the next review for when you are most likely to forget it. The computer version, AnkiDroid for Android and the AnkiWeb sync service are free. AnkiMobile, the official iPhone app, is a paid purchase. Drawback: you build or import your decks yourself, and Anki won't explain the material. It assumes you already understand it. Use it when: you have a lot of facts to keep for months, such as vocabulary, anatomy terms or formulas.
Quizlet. Quizlet's Learn mode builds a study path from your goal and how well you already know a set. Drawback: per Quizlet's help centre, Learn is part of the Quizlet Plus subscription. Without it you can try one free Learn session. Students in a teacher's Quizlet class get Learn and Test free for that class's sets. Use it when: your class already shares Quizlet sets, or you want ready-made question types without building cards.
Prepare for a test on a fixed date
Work backwards from the date: what is on the test, how many days you have, and when you will do a full practice run. If the test is tomorrow, read how to study the night before an exam instead.
Astra AI Exam Prep (our product). You upload notes, PDFs, past tests or worksheets, set the test date, and Exam Prep builds a study plan that ends on that date. Along the way you get exercises, quizzes, flashcards and podcasts, and at the end you can sit a timed mock exam or practise answering out loud. Details on the Exam Prep page. Drawback: the plan can only be as good as what you upload. Thin notes give a thin plan, and mock exams and podcasts need Astra AI Plus. Use it when: you have real class materials and a date.
Quizlet (Learn and Test). If your teacher shares sets, Learn and Test can turn them into practice before the test, with the subscription limits above.
Whichever app you use, do at least one full practice run under time pressure before the real thing, and keep a short list of the mistakes you made.
Check a math answer after you've tried it
Solvers are good at one job: telling you whether your answer and method match. Photomath lets you scan a problem, including word problems, and shows step-by-step explanations. Its site lists a free Basic plan and a paid plan at $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year (USD). Symbolab shows step-by-step solutions for typed or photographed problems and has practice quizzes. Google Lens offers step-by-step homework help by finding explainers, videos and web results for math and science questions.
Drawback for all three: the solution is one tap away, so it is easy to copy instead of learn. Try the problem first, then check. For course-by-course math picks, see the best AI math tutor and our Photomath alternative comparison. For chemistry, see the best AI for chemistry.
Turn your own notes or slides into practice
Of all the jobs here, this one sits closest to what your teacher will actually test.
- Astra AI Exam Prep turns uploaded notes, PDFs and past tests into lessons, quizzes and flashcards.
- Anki does it by hand: you write the cards from your notes. Slower, but writing the question is already study.
We could not confirm on other vendors' own pages, on 8 October 2026, that they build practice from files you upload, so they are not listed for this job.

Answer app or study app? The cover test
After a session, cover the solution, take a fresh problem of the same type and solve it without the app. If you can, the app taught you something. If you can't, it gave you an answer and you still need the method. Run this test at the end of every session during your trial week; it tells you more than any feature list.
Where Astra AI fits
Astra AI is our product, so read this section with that in mind. It fits best when you have your own class materials and a test date, and you want explanations and practice in one place across several subjects: a photographed homework question one evening, an Exam Prep plan built from your notes the next. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android via the mobile app as well as in the browser.
It is not the right pick for everything. If all you need is vocabulary drill, a dedicated flashcard app like Anki is simpler. If you need a person who holds you accountable, an AI tutor won't replace that. The free plan limits tutoring, the Plus price is only shown inside the app, and like any AI tutor it can get a step wrong, so compare tricky answers with your textbook or teacher.
How to pick in one week
- Name the job in one sentence, for example: "biology test on the 20th, chapters 4-6."
- Pick one app for that job from the sections above, plus a flashcard app if the test has a lot to memorise.
- Use it for five days, 20-30 minutes a day, and finish each session with the cover test.
- Decide on day seven. Keep the app if you can solve fresh problems without it and you actually opened it every day. Drop it if you mostly copied answers or kept hitting a paywall you don't want to pay for.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free study app that actually helps?
Yes, if you match it to the job. Anki is free on computers and Android and handles spaced-repetition flashcards. Khan Academy's lesson library is free. Astra AI lets you start free without a card, with limited tutoring. Check each vendor's own page for current limits, because free tiers change.
Is using an AI study app cheating?
Using an AI app to understand a topic, practise or check your own work is studying. Submitting answers it wrote for graded work usually breaks school rules. Your teacher's or school's policy decides where the line is, so check it, and use the app to explain steps rather than to produce what you hand in.
Flashcards or an AI tutor: which should I use first?
Start with a tutor-style app when you don't understand the material yet; flashcards can't explain anything. Once a topic makes sense, move the key facts and formulas into flashcards so you keep them until the test. Many students use both in the same week.
What should a good exam prep app do?
It should plan backwards from your test date, give you practice questions on the topics that will be tested, and let you do a timed practice run before the real exam. Apps that build practice from your own class notes stay closest to what your teacher will ask.
