A function is one of the basic concepts in mathematics that describes a special type of relationship between two sets of numbers or objects. In mathematics, a function is often understood as a “rule” that assigns exactly one value from a second set (called the codomain or range) to each value from a first set (called the domain).
You can think of a function as a machine where, when you insert a number (input), the machine performs a specific operation and outputs a new number (output). This “rule” or operation, which determines how the input value is converted into the output value, is mathematically written as f(x), where x is the input value, and f represents the rule of the function.
Every function has its domain, which is the set of all possible input values, and its codomain, the set of all possible output values. It is important that the function assigns exactly one value from the codomain to each value from the domain. This is a fundamental property of a function that distinguishes it from other mathematical relationships.
There are many different types of functions, depending on their form and properties. Some basic types include the linear function, which has a constant slope and is graphed as a straight line; the quadratic function, which is graphed as a parabola; and exponential and logarithmic functions, which have specific rates of growth and decay. Each type of function has its characteristic properties that determine the shape of its graph.
