For most schools in the lower 48 states, Hawaii and Washington, D.C., afternoon exams start at 12 p.m. local time. The exam has two sections of 1 hour 30 minutes each: 60 multiple-choice questions and 6 free-response questions, each section worth 50% of your score. Below you get the format, the eight units with their official weightings, a month by month plan from November to May, and how to handle the free-response questions. ## What's on the AP Biology exam According to AP Central, AP Biology is a hybrid digital exam. You answer the multiple-choice questions in the Bluebook app. You also read the free-response questions in Bluebook, but you handwrite your answers in a paper booklet. | Section | Questions | Time | Share of score | | ------------------ | ------------------- | ----------------- | -------------- | | I: Multiple choice | 60 | 1 hour 30 minutes | 50% | | II: Free response | 6 (2 long, 4 short) | 1 hour 30 minutes | 50% | Multiple-choice questions come as single questions and as sets tied to a shared stimulus, typically 4 to 5 questions per set. In Section II, the 2 long questions are worth 9 points each and the 4 short ones are worth 4 points each. Two more things worth knowing: calculators are permitted, and reference information is provided in print and in Bluebook. You can try the format ahead of time with the Bluebook test previews. ## The units, and which ones to start early The AP Biology course framework has eight units. The weightings below are for the multiple-choice section, as listed on AP Central. | Unit | Multiple-choice weighting | | ------------------------------------ | ------------------------- | | 1: Chemistry of Life | 8% to 11% | | 2: Cells | 10% to 13% | | 3: Cellular Energetics | 12% to 16% | | 4: Cell Communication and Cell Cycle | 10% to 15% | | 5: Heredity | 8% to 11% | | 6: Gene Expression and Regulation | 12% to 16% | | 7: Natural Selection | 13% to 20% | | 8: Ecology | 10% to 15% | Units 3, 6 and 7 have the highest upper ranges, so they deserve extra review time. Unit 3 (photosynthesis and cellular respiration) and Unit 6 (gene expression) are also units many students find abstract, so start reviewing them while they're still fresh from class, not in April. The framework also lists six science practices. Two of them carry the most weight in multiple choice: concept explanation (25% to 33%) and argumentation (20% to 26%). In plain terms: you need to explain processes in your own words and back claims with evidence. ## Month by month plan: November to May This assumes your class follows the units roughly in order. If your teacher uses a different sequence, keep the structure and swap the units. | Month | What to do | | ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | November | Review Units 1 and 2 with one-page summaries. Ten mixed multiple-choice questions every week. | | December | Unit 3. Draw the energy pathways from memory until you can do it without notes. | | January | Units 4 and 5. Start one short free-response question per week, timed. | | February | Unit 6. Add one long free-response question every two weeks. | | March | Units 7 and 8. First full practice exam under real timing. | | April | Second full practice exam. Rework every free-response question you lost points on. | | Late April to exam day | Weak units only, plus one timed section every few days. No new material in the final days. | Every week, mix in questions from older units. Spaced review beats one big cram at the end, and the exam mixes all eight units anyway. That tells you what to practice. 1. **Identify the experiment.** Name the independent variable, the dependent variable and the control before you answer anything. 2. **Graph carefully.** Correct graph type, labeled axes with units, a sensible scale, and error bars if the data includes them. 3. **Claim, evidence, reasoning.** State your claim, cite the specific numbers from the data, then explain the biology that connects them. An example written by Astra AI (not a College Board question): "Plants in the 25°C group produced more oxygen (12 mL per hour) than plants at 10°C (4 mL per hour). This supports the claim that photosynthesis rate increases with temperature in this range, because the enzymes involved work faster at higher temperatures, up to their optimum." Notice the order: claim, numbers, mechanism. That structure works on almost every long question. Past free-response questions with scoring guidelines are on AP Central. Use them in March and April, and grade yourself honestly with the official guidelines. ## Short free-response and data questions: quick wins The four short questions cover scientific investigation, conceptual analysis, analysis of a model or visual representation, and data analysis. At 4 points each, they reward precise, short answers. - **Scientific investigation:** practice writing a testable hypothesis and naming a control in one sentence each. - **Conceptual analysis:** answer exactly what the verb asks. "Describe" is not "explain". - **Models and visuals:** say what the model shows, then what happens if one part changes. - **Data analysis:** calculate when asked, show the setup, and include units. A good drill: take one short question a day for two weeks and answer it in five minutes. ## When you get stuck: teacher, tutor, AI Start with your AP teacher. They know your class's pacing and can tell you which free-response habits are costing you points. A private tutor helps if you want someone to check your written answers every week. An AI tutor like Astra AI is useful for quick questions at night, like why the electron transport chain needs oxygen, or what a graph is really showing. It explains things step by step, at your level. For most students, not all, it can replace a private tutor. If what you need most is a human reading your handwritten answers and coaching your writing, a teacher is the better fit. Also keep in mind that AI can make mistakes. Ask it to explain how it reached an answer and compare that with your class materials. You can start free, no card required. Astra AI Plus unlocks unlimited tutoring, mock exams and podcasts for less per month than a single hour of private tutoring.
